nylon vs polyester flag

American flags are widely fashioned in two main materials: nylon and polyester. They both have their benefits and their weaknesses, and each is best for certain environments and uses.
Nylon is lightweight and glossy. Its texture is slightly rough, and somewhere between fabric and plastic. On the other hand, polyester has a completely matte surface. It looks and feels like cotton, rougher and heavier than nylon and without a hint of shine.
When choosing between a nylon flag and a polyester flag, it is important to consider whether the flag will be outside 24 hours a day, from sunrise to sunset or just on holidays. In general, polyester is a better and more durable choice for more frequently flown flags.

Nylon is lighter than polyester, and therefore flies more easily in areas without high winds. It is a better choice for areas like the suburbs. However, if you live by the sea or in another place with high winds and wet weather, polyester is a better choice.

Come check out the two different materials at American Heritage today. We are located in Creve Coeur on Olive Blvd.

Pearl Harbor

Today is the 75th anniversary of Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, which killed more than 2,400 Americans at a naval base in Hawaii.
The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt requested Congress to declare war on Japan; Congress accepted his declaration with just one dissenting vote. Three days later, Japanese allies Germany and Italy also declared war on the United States, and again Congress reciprocated. More than two years into the conflict, America had finally joined World War II.
In remembrance of this day, flags will be flown at half staff today.

flags

There have been 27 official versions of the American flag, starting with the first one in 1777 which displayed 13 stripes and 13 stars (for the 13 original colonies). When Kentucky and Vermont joined the union, the flag took on two more stars, so that from 1795 to 1818, 15 stripes and 15 stars graced the flag. It was this version of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to compose “The Star-Spangled Banner,” during the battle at Fort McHenry. Anticipating a crowded field of stripes, lawmakers decided to honor each new state with a star, and leave the stripes at 13, after 1818.

American Heritage has a variety of flags and we can get a 13 star flag, Betsy Ross flag, etc.. for you.

history of flag

The United States Flag is the third oldest of the National Standards of the world; older than the Union Jack of Britain or the Tricolor of France.
The flag was first authorized by Congress June 14, 1777. This date is now observed as Flag Day throughout America.
The flag was first flown from Fort Stanwix, on the site of the present city of Rome, New York, on August 3, 1777. It was first under fire for three days later in the Battle of Oriskany, August 6, 1777.
It was first decreed that there should be a star and a stripe for each state, making thirteen of both; for the states at the time had just been erected from the original thirteen colonies.
The colors of the Flag may be thus explained: The red is for valor, zeal and fervency; the white for hope purity, cleanliness of life, and rectitude of conduct; the blue, the color of heaven, for reverence to God, loyalty, sincerity, justice and truth.
The star (an ancient symbol of India, Persia and Egypt) symbolized dominion and sovereignty, as well as lofty aspirations. The constellation of the stars within the union, one star for each state, is emblematic of our Federal Constitution, which reserves to the States their individual sovereignty except as to rights delegated by them to the Federal Government.
The symbolism of the Flag was thus interpreted by Washington: “We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty.”
In 1791, Vermont, and in 1792, Kentucky were admitted to the Union and the number of stars and stripes was raised to fifteen in correspondence. As other states came into the Union it became evident there would be too many stripes. So in 1818 Congress enacted that the number of stripes be reduced and restricted henceforth to thirteen representing the thirteen original states; while a star should be added for each succeeding state. That law is the law of today.
The name “Old Glory” was given to our National Flag August 10, 1831, by Captain William Driver of the brig Charles Doggett.
The Flag was first carried in battle at the Brandywine, September 11, 1777. It first flew over foreign territory January 28, 1778, at Nassau, Bahama Islands; Fort Nassau having been captured by the American in the course of the war for independence. The first foreign salute to the flag was rendered by the french admiral LaMotte Piquet, off Quiberon Bay, February 13, 1778.
The United States Flag is unique in the deep and noble significance of its message to the entire world, a message of national independence, of individual liberty, of idealism, of patriotism.
It symbolizes national independence and popular sovereignty. It is not the Flag of a reigning family or royal house, but of 205 million free people welded into a Nation, one and inseparable, united not only by community of interest, but by vital unity of sentiment and purpose; a Nation distinguished for the clear individual conception of its citizens alike of their duties and their privileges, their obligations and their rights.
It incarnates for all mankind the spirit of Liberty and the glorious ideal of human Freedom; not the freedom of unrestraint or the liberty of license, but an unique ideal of equal opportunity for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, safeguarded by the stern and lofty principles of duty, of righteousness and of justice, and attainable by obedience to self-imposed laws.
Floating from lofty pinnacle of American Idealism, it is a beacon of enduring hope, like the famous Bartholdi Statue of Liberty enlightening the World to the oppressed of all lands. It floats over a wondrous assemblage of people from every racial stock of the earth whose united hearts constitute an indivisible and invincible force for the defense and succor of the downtrodden.
It embodies the essence of patriotism. Its spirit is the spirit of the American nation. Its history is the history of the American people. Emblazoned upon its folds in letters of living light are the names and fame of our heroic dead, the Fathers of the Republic who devoted upon its altars their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Twice told tales of National honor and glory cluster thickly about it. Ever victorious, it has emerged triumphant from eight great National conflicts. It flew at Saratog, at Yorktown, at Palo Alto, at Gettysburg, at Minala bay, at Chateau-Thierry, at Iwo Jima. It bears witness to the immense expansion of our national boundaries, the development of our natural resources, and the splendid structure of our civilization. It prophesies the triumph of popular government, of civic and religious liberty and of national righteousness throughout the world.
The flag first rose over thirteen states along the Atlantic seaboard, with a population of some three million people. Today it flies over fifty states, extending across the continent, and over great islands of the two oceans; and two hundred and five million owe it allegiance. It has been brought to this proud position by love and sacrifice. Citizens have advanced it and heroes have died for it. It is the sign made visible of the strong spirit that has brought liberty and prosperity to the people of America. It is the flag of all us alike. Let us accord it honor and loyalty.

Here at American Heritage- our flags are 100 percent made in the US. Come get your US flag today. We are located off of Olive Blvd in Creve Coeur.

St. Louis Arch

On this day in 1965, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch, a spectacular 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel marking the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri.

In addition to the Gateway Arch, the Jefferson Expansion Memorial includes the Museum of Westward Expansion and the Old Courthouse of St. Louis, where two of the famous Dred Scott slavery cases were heard in the 1860s.
Today, some 4 million people visit the park each year to wander its nearly 100 acres, soak up some history and take in the breathtaking views from Saarinen’s gleaming arch.

flags around the neighborhood

Good Morning.
As some of you may know- I moved over Labor Day weekend. One of the first things I noticed was almost every house has a flag flying. Some on a pole, some in their garden or on their mailbox, and some next to their front door.
Most holidays requiring flags to fly at 1/2 mast for the year have passed, but it's nice to live in a community where flags are flying every day- for no other reason than to say I'm proud to be an American.
At American Heritage we sell US flags all year round. Consider a flag pole kit or a flag for a anniversary gift, house warming or birthday gift. People feel very special when receiving a gift of Heritage and Love of Country.
Stop by American Heritage for your next flag purchase or go
Online and purchase at
Www.americanheritagebannersandflags.com or stop by our store 11062 Olive in Creve Couer.
Start a great fad in your neighborhood. They'll love you for it.

veteran's day

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

For all those who have served in the military- get a flag on Veteran's day and receive 10 percent off your purchase here at American Heritage. We are located in Creve Coeur off of Olive Blvd.

military flags

The Marine Corps Flag features an eagle, globe, and anchor insignia. Accepted in 1868, the symbol became part of the official seal of the Marine Corp after final approval by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954.
The Navy Flag also features an eagle; its wings are spread-out to suggest it is defending a ship at sea. Nautical imagery includes a circular rope surrounding the central insignia, while the words United States Navy are presented in blue letters on a yellow scroll and battle streamers represent major battles in history.
An Eagle and scroll are symbolized on the Air Force Flag. A meaningful alternative to some of the company’s other flags; it features the Air Force coat of arms, highlighted among an ultramarine blue background. The 13 white stars represent the original colonies, while the outstretched wings of the bald eagle frame three of these, representing the National Defense establishment’s three branches – the Army, Air Force, and Navy. The flag and symbol was approved in 1951 and remains the same today.
As other military flags do, the Coast Guard Flag has an eagle as its centerpiece. It has a white background with a banner, “United States Coast Guard” printed on top, while a shield on the eagle’s breast features a blue chief, set over vertical white and red stripes. The date 1790 is still printed on the emblem; this is the date the Revenue Cutter Service, which later became the Coast Guard, was founded. Formed in 1915, the Coast Guard has retained the same imagery.

Prior to 1956, the Army was the only military branch that was without a flag to represent the entire service.  On June 14th of that year, the flag of the US Army was unveiled to the public.  The flag features a white background, with “United States Army” written on a red scroll and the original War Office seal above it in blue, with the year of the Army’s creation, “1775,” at the bottom in blue.

today in history

On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress formally declares the name of the new nation to be the “United States” of America. This replaced the term “United Colonies,” which had been in general use.
In the Congressional declaration dated September 9, 1776, the delegates wrote, “That in all continental commissions, and other instruments, where, heretofore, the words ‘United Colonies’ have been used, the stile be altered for the future to the “United States.”
A resolution by Richard Henry Lee, which had been presented to Congress on June 7 and approved on July 2, 1776, issued the resolve, “That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States….” As a result, John Adams thought July 2 would be celebrated as “the most memorable epoch in the history of America.” Instead, the day has been largely forgotten in favor of July 4, when Jefferson’s edited Declaration of Independence was adopted. That document also states, “That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES.” However, Lee began with the line, while Jefferson saved it for the middle of his closing paragraph.
By September, the Declaration of Independence had been drafted, signed, printed and sent to Great Britain. What Congress had declared to be true on paper in July was clearly the case in practice, as Patriot blood was spilled against the British on the battlefields of Boston, Montreal, Quebec and New York. Congress had created a country from a cluster of colonies and the nation’s new name reflected that reality.

Show support of this country by flying an US flag. Don't have one- come into American Heritage today to get one or give us a call to place an order.

signs

You already know it’s important for your sign to express the right information to the right people in order to boost sales and brand awareness. Have you ever considered the influence that color choice can have on your potential customers? Much work has been done on determining the subtle effects that color can have on our psychological states. At American Heritage, our artist is knowledgeable in how to effectively use color to make your advertisement pop in the right ways. You can come to us with a concept, sketch or goal and the professionals working in our design services will turn your ideas into compelling signs and advertisements.
Consider your target audience
Age, gender, interests and nationality are just a few of the factors that determine how people react to color. Consider who is looking for your product when deciding on artwork for your signs and banners. Consider who your business targets, and why.
Think about your sign location. It’s very important that your sign be visible no matter where you need it, but consider your advertising location as well. Some studies claim visibility is up to 40% higher with this combination.
People are strongly influenced by colors, which can subconsciously make us feel certain emotions or feel compelled to do certain things. Artists generally agree that there are five “color groups,” each with different effects on the brain.
Call us at American Heritage for information: 314-432-2101 or email at info@amheritage.com

some more facts about flags

Happy Friday everyone- here are some more facts I thought you would enjoy reading about.

“Backwards American flags” on airplanes and military uniforms are worn with the stars in front to “give the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.”
During truce talks between North and South Korea, both parties would try to bring a bigger national flag than the other to each meeting. This went on until a special meeting was called to address the size of the flags, as they could no longer fit in the room.
According the Flag Code, the American Flag should never be used for advertisement purposes in any manner whatsoever.
Texas is the only state where citizens also pledge allegiance to the state flag.
There was about a 15 year period in which the flag of France was just a white flag.
The flag of Mozambique has an AK-47 on it.
Come into American Heritage today and share a fun fact you may know about a flag. While here, you can look at the variety of flags we have.
We look forward to seeing you

Labor Day!

To many, Labor Day marks the end of the summer season, even as Memorial Day marks its beginning. Many see Labor Day as their last chance to get out and take a vacation before summer is gone, and many workers get a two-week annual vacation period with Labor Day Weekend right in the middle of the two weeks off.
Most U.S. schools restart classes, after the long summer break, about a week before Labor Day. Others schools, however, resume classes on the day after Labor Day, thus allowing families to get in their last taste of summer before the school year gets underway.
While Canada also celebrates Labour Day at the same time as in the U.S., though spelling it differently to keep faith with the UK, many other countries have their own equivalent of Labor Day. May Day (on May 1st), for example, is observed by over 80 nations to give workers a much-needed day off, and there are also other countries with yet other dates for their version of Labor Day.
The first U.S. Labor Day celebrations took place in New York City in 1882 at the behest of local labor unions, who wanted to put the fruits of their industries on public display. In 1887, Oregon instituted a state-level Labor Day holiday, and 29 other states followed suit before Labor Day finally became a federal holiday in 1894.
The original Labor Day celebrations consisted of street parades displaying the contributions of laborers in various industries followed by local festivals or other amusements. Over time, it became a time for giving speeches on labor-related topics, which is still occasionally done today.
Besides recognition of labor and general entertainment, another reason Labor Day was instituted was to provide a public holiday in the long, “holiday-free” span between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. This gap-filler strategy, combined with its “strategic position” at the end of the summer season, has made Labor Day a much-appreciated break for many U.S. workers.
Although there are still a few parades and some fireworks displays on Labor Day Weekend, it is not a big time for “official events.” Mostly, it is the beginning of the football season, a time for picnics and barbecues, and a time to go on vacation to the beach, national parks, or elsewhere.

Little less then two weeks until Labor Day is here. Come into American Heritage to get your flag needs.

history of flagpoles

  • Early flag poles were simply trees selected for their relative straightness that were cut down, stripped of bark and branches, and then replanted in the ground with a flag attached at the top.

Refined Wooden Pole

  • More refined wooden poles were made with spruce or pine trees, which naturally grow straighter than hardwood trees. These trees were stripped of bark and branches and then thoroughly smoothed down with draw knives and planes. They were covered with multiple coats of animal fat to make them weatherproof before being planted in the ground. Because the poles were planted directly in dirt, they tended to rot at the base. Still, well-constructed wooden poles were beautiful artifacts that could remain functional for as many as 50 years.

Steel Pole

  • Near the turn of the 20th century, steel flag poles became more popular, although they were often simply the recycled materials that had served other purposes. Ships masts were often repurposed as flag poles. Steel section poles used to house trolley lines were employed to make flag poles and eventually, sectional steel flag poles were manufactured for the purpose of flying flags. Wooden poles became obsolete. In the later 1920s, flag pole producers began constructing the long tapered poles so common today.
  • It is amazing how much poles have transformed over the years. If you are looking for a flagpole- come check out American Heritage today located in Creve Coeur off Olive Blvd.

September 11

September 11 is a day no one will ever forget. I remember being in 6th grade and the principle coming into the lunch room to discuss what happened with to the 5th and 6th graders. At that age, I wasn't too sure what was going on but looking back that day is something I will never forget.
In remembrance of the 2001 attacks, a 9/11 Remembrance Flag has been created to honor those that sacrificed their lives and those that are fighting for our country.
Come check out American Heritage today or give us a call to get a US flag or a Remembrance Flag to support our nation.

retiring your flags

A popular way to retire a worn-out American Flag is by burning it. Page 76 of the BSA Handbook says, “A national flag that is worn beyond repair may be burned in a fire. The ceremony should be conducted with dignity and respect and the flag burned completely to ashes.”

At the retirement ceremony, you can cut up your flag using an approved technique that doesn’t cut through the blue star field. When a flag has been cut up, it is no longer officially a flag.
Here is one method:
  1. Stretch out the corners of the flag.
  2. Cut the flag in half, vertically — do not cut into the blue star field.
  3. Place the two halves together and cut in half, horizontally.
  4. You will have four pieces of flag, one being the blue star field and the other three red and white stripes.
  5. Put the flag in a container and dispose of it properly.

These are two ways to retire a United States Flag. If you are uncomfortable with ever of these methods, we at American Heritage can retire your flag for you. Just bring it in- we are located in Creve Couer off Olive Blvd.

labor day

Labor Day is coming up- only about three weeks left until then.
Here are some facts about Labor Day that you might not have known:
  1. The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.
  2. 10,000 workers marched from City Hall all the way to 42nd Street and then met with their families in Wendel’s Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches.
  3. Canada is said to have originated the idea of hosting a day honoring the labor movement. In 1872, they held a “Nine-Hour Movement” to show support for striking workers.
  4. There is disagreement about who actually proposed Labor Day as a holiday. Some say it was Peter J. McGuire, who was the cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. Others believe that it was Matthew Maguire, a machinist.
  5. Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.

sitting on top a flagpole

Back in the 1920's, people used to sit on flagpoles. The flagpole sitting fad began in 1924 when a friend dared actor Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly to sit on a flagpole. Kelly took on the dare and commenced to sitting on a flagpole for 13 hours and 13 minutes. The odd spectacle set off a series of imitators who sought fame and money and a chance to beat Kelly’s record. During the next five years, flagpole sitters set records of 12 days, 17 days, and 21 days.

Come share a fun fact with us at American Heritage- we are located off Olive Blvd in Creve Couer.

state flags

The Missouri flag was created in Cape Girardeau, MO by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver (January 11, 1854– October 18, 1944). She started her flag project in 1908 as part of her volunteer activities with the DAR when she was selected chairperson of the DAR committee to research and design Missouri's flag. Oliver studied state flags extensively. She wrote each state's secretary of state for data about how their state's flags had been designed and officially approved. Her original design incorporated Missouri's coat of arms and was rendered as a painted paper flag by her friend Mary Kochitzky.

The flag is a tricolor consisting of three horizontal stripes of red, white and blue. These represent valor, purity, vigilance, and justice. The colors also reflect the state's historic status as part of the French Louisiana. In the center white stripe is the Seal of MO, circled by a blue band containing 24 stars, symbolizing Missouri's admission as the 24th state.
